Acne is a common skin condition which is primarily caused by congestion in the hair follicles (AKA pores).

Our skin has its own protection and moisturising function and this comes from the sebum (oil) produced by our sebaceous glands. When these glands produce too much sebum. our pores can become clogged up with dead skin cells, bacteria (P acnes) and other substances, which block the pore.

When the congested pore, is close to the skin surface you will get comedones AKA spots. Spots are little pockets under the skin surface, where there is a collection of sebum and dead skin. There are different types of spots, e.g; pustules, papules, nodules, cysts and white heads. When a pore is open, this will create a “blackhead”, due to oxidisation. Acne spots or lesions may be either inflammatory or non inflammatory, they can be red and painful and may form cysts.

Acne Scars

Acne scars can occur when  spots cause damage to the skin, whereby the skin forms scar tissue which remains once healed. They can also be created if you pick or squeeze your spots.

There are 3 particular types of acne scarring, these being:

  • rolling scars which make the skin look uneaven and rolling due to bands of scar tissue that have assembled under the skin
  • ice pick scars which make the skin have a ruptured and punctured appearance caused by small holes in the dermis
  • boxcar scars which appear as round cavities in the skins surface.
